Could Klay Thompson end up back in Golden State? Alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, he was a cornerstone of four championships and one of the NBA’s defining dynasties. Contract talks didn’t come together, and Thompson moved on to the Dallas Mavericks. Now, with neither side finding much success since the breakup, it has sparked questions about whether a reunion could eventually make sense.
Only Stephen Curry Can Urge the Warriors To Bring Back Klay Thompson
The only way for the Warriors to even consider backtracking and attempting to undo this move would be if their franchise centerpiece forced them to do the same. That might just be enough, given that Curry holds an incredible amount of influence over the Warriors’ upper management.
While Thompson joined the Mavericks under the assumption that he would have the opportunity to contend for an NBA championship alongside Luka Dončić, everyone knows that this hope was crushed soon after he joined the Mavericks.
According to recent reports, Thompson’s return is possible only if Curry pushes for it. This makes sense given that the Warriors will have to trade away multiple assets or create cap space flexibility to bring Thompson back immediately.
Curry has made it clear that he misses playing alongside his Splash Brother and would love the opportunity to do so again. However, it is unclear if the Warriors’ veteran is willing to prompt his team to bring back a player who left them on his own terms.
Thompson’s return to the Warriors may seem unlikely at this point in time, especially since the team has moved on from him, bringing over other stars such as Jimmy Butler, Buddy Hield and Al Horford. It might not make much sense to blow it all up, even if Curry wished for it.
It is much more likely for the Warriors to offer Thompson a short and relatively small contract, allowing him to finish his career with the team. That would likely be in the very final stages of his career, something that is still a few years away given that is is 35 years old.
Since Thompson’s playstyle does not rely significantly on athleticism, he can remain in the league till he is 40 years old. At that point, the Warriors may decide that appeasing the fanbase and doing right by Thompson is a greater priority than contending for an NBA championship.
Only time will tell if Thompson will be presented with the opportunity to finish his career as a Warrior, something that Curry and the majority of the fanbase hope to see take place.
