After nine years in the NBA, Ben Simmons isn’t actively playing in the league for the first time in his career. While Simmons technically played in only seven of his nine seasons, this marks the first time he is both inactive and a free agent.
Now a free agent, many are wondering if Simmons plans to make a comeback. Some have speculated whether he would consider playing for a former team if he returns to the hardwood.
Ben Simmons is Open to Playing With His Former Team
A fan recently went on Instagram to directly ask Simmons if he would play for the Philadelphia 76ers again, given the opportunity. The Sixers drafted Simmons as the No. 1 pick in 2016, though he didn’t make his debut until the 2017-18 season.
Simmons formed a duo with Joel Embiid and helped make the Sixers an elite team in the Eastern Conference after many seasons of struggles. Unfortunately, due to injuries and chemistry issues, both Simmons and the Sixers agreed to part ways in the 2021-22 season, resulting in his trade to the Brooklyn Nets in February 2022.
Given that history, Simmons’ response to the fan on Instagram was surprising. The Australian guard revealed that he is open to suiting up for the Sixers again if offered a contract — and said he would do it for free.
“It ain’t about the (money), I’d hoop there for free,” Simmons replied. “It’s deeper than what they make y’all believe, which is why I keep it pushing. Right now, the focus is on getting the body to 100% before putting my health on the line again… Like I have been the past few years.”

Simmons played his best basketball during his four seasons with Philadelphia, averaging 15.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. He earned three All-Star selections and was named to both the All-NBA and All-Defensive teams.
Since departing the 76ers, however, he has failed to average double-digit scoring and has not received any accolades. His most recent stint came with the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2024-25 season, when he averaged just 2.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 16.4 minutes per game — all career lows.
While Simmons has attributed his current inactivity to a focus on his physical condition, reports indicate that several teams — including the New York Knicks and Sacramento Kings — extended contract offers.
According to those reports, Simmons declined the proposals due to the financial terms. Some accounts suggest he is holding out for a more favorable deal, while others point to the possibility that he may be weighing retirement.
For now, fans will have to wait for Simmons to make any announcements regarding his career.
