The Los Angeles Lakers made some moves yesterday when they decided to waive Christian Koloko to sign Drew Timme to a two-way contract. There’s no telling what will come from this, but it gives him the rare opportunity most NBA players only dream of: Playing with LeBron James.
The amusing thing is, Timme had the opportunity to be teammates with James when the latter was assigned to play for the Lakers’ G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. Timme reflected on what that was like, even if it was brief.
What Did Drew Timme Have To Say About Playing With LeBron James on the Lakers?
While talking with reporters after signing with the Lakers, Timme did not hold back his excitement to play beside James. He’s excited because the two were technically teammates when James was assigned to play for the South Bay Lakers.
“It was pretty crazy, man,” Timme said, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “Like, that’s the GOAT. To be able to share the court with him, especially being a G-League team, that’s so outside of the normal of anything.”
He added, “It was crazy, but I think it just shows how connected the two programs are and it’s super cool. He came down and that;s our job is to help him get back speed so we were just glad to help and it was really cool to work with him.”

This has been a season of firsts for James, as this was the first time in his NBA career that he had started the season out with an injury. This was also the first time he had ever been given a G-League assignment, as he would typically return to the floor anytime he had to miss time.
Amazingly, Timme is not only one of the few G-League players who have been teammates with James at that specific level, but he’s also one of the few NBA players, period, who have experience playing in the G-League and with James.
There’s no telling if that will be the last time James is ever assigned to play for the South Bay Lakers. Still, it’s understandable how much Timme gushed about the opportunity to play with him then and may get the same chance to do it again this season and potentially beyond.
