Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd provided an update on Anthony Davis’ current injury status and the most recent health issue the Mavericks’ star forward is dealing with during the early stages of the 2025-26 NBA season.
Although the Mavericks initially traded for Davis under the assumption that he would be able to lead the team to an NBA championship, his injuries and lack of availability have prevented him from consistently remaining in the lineup. While fans may have hoped that Davis was on the verge of making a comeback, Kidd’s recent statements suggest otherwise.
Jason Kidd Discusses Anthony Davis’ Current Health Complications
While Davis has established himself as one of the premier forwards in the league, he has faced considerable criticism for his recurring injuries. At present, Davis is recovering from a calf injury sustained during a matchup between the Mavericks and the Indiana Pacers. Nearly a month has passed since he was sidelined, leading fans to believe he may be nearing a return.
However, Kidd recently revealed that Davis is also dealing with an illness, making his availability for the Mavericks’ upcoming games unclear. Following Saturday night’s contest against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Mavericks embark on a four-game road trip with stops against the Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Denver Nuggets. Fans are hopeful that Davis will return in time for the Mavericks’ NBA Cup group-stage matchup against the Lakers — an opportunity for him to face his former team.

Davis has averaged 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists through five games this season.
In the aftermath of Nico Harrison’s firing from the Mavericks, Davis’ future with the franchise remains uncertain. Some contend that the fan base will not feel fully at ease unless Davis also moves on.
Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban, however, has dismissed trade speculation, stating that the team intends to continue pursuing victories with Davis, the center acquired in the much-discussed Luka Doncic trade.
“We won’t. We want to try to win,” Cuban said when asked if he and Mavs governor Patrick Dumont would consider dealing Davis, according to The Athletic’s Joe Vardon.
Regardless, Davis’ prolonged absence is a significant concern as the Mavericks continue to struggle. The hope remains that he can return soon to help the team salvage its season.
