18-Year-Old LeBron James Caught Asking Michael Jordan What Drives Greatness

A resurfaced 22-year-old video of an 18-year-old LeBron James speaking with Michael Jordan is taking over social media. Read to know more.

In every sport, there’s at least one debate that refuses to fade. In basketball, that never-ending conversation revolves around one simple question: Who is the actual GOAT: Michael Jordan or LeBron James?

But a recently resurfaced clip has paused the debate for a moment, giving fans something far more wholesome than rivalry. A viral video now circulating on social media shows 18-year-old James talking to his idol, Jordan, and asking him a question that reveals just how deeply he admired the legend long before becoming one himself.

Michael Jordan’s Old Interaction With LeBron James Went Viral

The video, which was recorded 22 years ago, captured a young James speaking with Jordan in a quiet yet powerful moment. In the video, teenage James can be seen asking MJ where his relentless desire to win came from. “The burning desire to become the best, how did that come about?” asked James to Jordan.

Without hesitation, Jordan gave his answer, which was simple and instantly impactful. “I think it’s my passion for the game, my desire to get as close as I can to perfection. Listen to your coaches. Listen to the media, to some degree, because you’re gonna hear a lot of criticism about your game… Work your way up to the top… I know what the bottom looked like. I never wanted to go back there,” said Jordan.

Jordan entered the league in 1984 as the No. 3 pick by the Chicago Bulls and wasted no time in showing his greatness. He became the Rookie of the Year while averaging 28.2 points per game, which was a tone-setter for what was to come.

Over the years, he transformed into an elite player and finished with the NBA’s top career scoring average of 30.1, plus 6.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.3 steals, six titles with six Finals MVPs, five regular-season MVPs, and 14 All-Star nods.

Despite the legendary status of both men, James and Jordan have had very few public interactions throughout the years. The viral clip comes from the 2003 Jordan Brand Classic, where James played for Team Black and dropped 34 points. But even with his standout performance, Team Black fell to Team Silver.

Interestingly, this wasn’t their first meeting. James initially met Jordan back in 2001, when he was only 16, a moment he later discussed during an episode of “New Heights” with Travis and Jason Kelce in January of this year.

“MJ, Antoine Walker, and the rest of those guys did not let young guys get on the court at all. I was 16 years old, a Sophomore in High School, and it takes a while to get on the court,” said James during that podcast.

Looking back now, there’s a clear sense that James not only heard Jordan’s words that day but he lived by them. James entered the NBA straight out of high school in 2003 when he was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Over the course of two decades, he has averaged 27.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists. He has also captured four championships with the Heat, Cavaliers, and Lakers while also claiming Finals MVP each time. Moreover, he has also secured four regular-season MVP awards and garnered 21 All-Star selections, serving as a model of longevity and adaptability.

However, the 2025–26 season has tested him as a sciatica issue has forced him to miss 14 games, and his season debut saw him score only 11 points. Even so, Lakers fans continue to believe. They’re holding onto hope that James will soon regain his form and will make another championship push.
