Mark Cuban Clarifies His Exact Role With Mavericks After Getting Back in the Fold

Mark Cuban revealed his current role with the Mavericks organization since owner Patrick Dumont fired general manager Nico Harrison.

Mark Cuban has seen his involvement with the Dallas Mavericks decrease since he sold his majority ownership to Patrick Dumont and the Adelson family.

While still a minority owner of the NBA franchise, his absence from major decisions saw Dallas make the earth-shattering trade that featured Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis. With Dumont seeing the errors and firing general manager Nico Harrison, Cuban has seen his role grow back into a more important one.

What Mark Cuban Said About Current Mavericks Role

Following the Mavericks’ woeful start to the 2025-26 season, Dumont made the decision to part ways with Harrison. As fans grew distant from the team due to the moves that sent Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers this past February, the move was necessary for Dumont to carry out to ensure the loyal fan base that the organization will be better moving forward.

That is where Cuban comes in. Having spoken with The Athletic’s reporter Joe Vardon, he revealed his current responsibilities to the franchise, which involve being an adviser for Dumont and the front office.

“To that end, Cuban told The Athletic he is “an adviser” to Dumont, the Sands Corporation president and chief operating officer who is Miriam Adelson’s son-in-law. Cuban added that Dumont “makes all the final decisions.” “I’m here to help him where I can,” Cuban continued.

A team source confirmed Cuban’s role as an adviser to Dumont and reiterated Cuban’s point that it is ultimately Dumont who has final say,” Vardon wrote.

Cuban was the Mavericks’ majority owner from 2000 to 2023, which saw the franchise earn one championship in 2011. They maintained their relevance as a consistent playoff contender, having legend Dirk Nowitzki lead the team up until his retirement in 2019 and make a smooth transition into the start of having Doncic take the reins.

When Cuban sold his majority ownership to Dumont and the Adelson family, the sale was an estimated $3.5 billion when he completed it in December 2023.

Cuban and the Mavericks will look to recover from their poor start to the 2025-26 campaign. They missed the playoffs last season, a significant decline after reaching the NBA Finals the year prior.

Dallas has a 4-12 record to start this season, sitting at 13th place in the Western Conference so far. They are ahead of the Sacramento Kings by 0.5 games while being behind the Memphis Grizzlies by 0.5 games.

They rank 27th in points per game (110.3) and 18th in points allowed per game (117.2). This includes having the worst offensive rating (104.9) and fourth-best defensive rating (111.5) in the NBA, according to Basketball Reference.

Following Wednesday’s loss against the New York Knicks, the Mavericks will remain at home as they prepare for their upcoming NBA Cup contest. They host the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 21 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
