“Clownish”: Green Responds to Aldama’s On-Court Run-In and Flagrant Foul Call

The word “outspoken” and Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green go together like
peanut butter and jelly.

Fans recently got another example of that thanks to Green’s latest take on Aldama and a situation involving the two players which has gone viral.

The Grizzlies and Warriors met for the first time this season on Oct. 27, and his interactions with Aldama that night left Green with a lot to say.

On The Draymond Green Show, the Michigan State alum spoke about the moment he and Aldama got into it during their game at the Chase Center in the third quarter.

Aldama had recovered a turnover by Green and was aiming to score on the breakaway when Green wrapped him up under the basket. Aldama was twisted, fell to the ground, and came up holding his head, prompting referees to call a Flagrant-1 foul on Green and give Aldama two shots.

Green wasn’t pleased with the call, and offered context.

“He’s a guy who always talks, every time we play them he talks, he likes to mix it up a bit,” Green said of Aldama. “I’m all for mixing it up a bit, but what I don’t like is guys that talk and act like they want to mix it up and then you get a little baby foul and you fall out grabbing your neck, grabbing your head like you dead.”

Green continued, “And I just disagree with fronting like that, because even if you get the call he did … it’s almost like you sold your soul for two free throws. You just laying out on the floor, rollin’ out like you dead. Just to get up and walk to the bench and walk to the free-throw line.”

Aldama would go to the line and miss both free throws, which led to Green excessively skipping around with glee. The Warriors would go on to win decisively over Memphis, 131-118, despite Aldama posting 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in 22 minutes as opposed to Green’s seven points and four rebounds in 28 minutes.

Green didn’t let up. “What happens is you lose all respect,” he said. “So now you a sucka, and we can’t un-sucka you because you just acted like a complete clown because you listening to some dumba– coach who telling you ‘If he foul, you sell it.’”

The four-time NBA champion ended his comments with a blistering condemnation of Aldama. “And so I thought it was clownish of him to do that, he made a complete clown of himself and I also made a clown of him when he missed those two free throws. You can’t fall out like that and then miss two free throws, champ. I mean, not champ … kid.”

Aldama has stepped up for the Grizzlies, as he was a factor during their first-round loss against the eventual NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder. He’s coming off a strong Eurobasket performance for the Spanish national team during the summer as well, and he’s averaging 11.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game to start his fifth season in the league.

It’s a safe bet that Green and Aldama will butt heads again during their next two regular-season matchups. And, the conflict might bring another dimension to the rivalry between the Warriors and Grizzlies, one born out of the intense 2022 Western Conference Semifinals series the two teams played against each other.
