American youngster Learner Tien has a tough hurdle ahead as he faces 12th seed Andrey Rublev in the second round of the season’s final Masters 1000 event in Paris. The 19-year-old skipped the indoor hard-court events leading up to the 2025 Paris Masters, with his last appearance coming at the Shanghai Masters. Â He progressed steadily before Daniil Medvedev eliminated him in three sets in the fourth round. Thereafter, Tien started his run in Paris with a 6-2, 7-6(7) win over Portugal’s Nuno Borges.
Rublev, meanwhile, endured a disappointing build-up to the Paris Masters. Rublev entered the ATP 500 event in Vienna as the seventh seed and was expected to make a deep run, but he fell short, losing 2-6, 7-6(5), 2-6 to Cameron Norrie in the opening round. Determined to make amends in Paris, Rublev opened his campaign with a convincing straight-sets win over Jacob Fearnley and advanced into the next round.

Tien vs Rublev Head-to-Head
It’s a budding rivalry between Tien and Rublev, one that began only recently during the 2025 North American hard-court swing. The two are currently level at 1-1 in their head-to-head, setting the stage for an intriguing contest. Their first meeting came at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, where Tien secured a straightforward 7-5, 6-2 win. Rublev, however, responded at the Cincinnati Masters, securing a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory to even the score.
Tien vs Rublev Prediction
It should be noted that while Rublev couldn’t make much of an impact in the indoor events leading up to Paris, Tien opted out of all of them. Despite that, both players made strong starts to their respective campaigns.
Rublev’s serve could prove particularly effective in the relatively quicker conditions of the Paris La Défense Arena. The Russian has won 83% of his service games and 67% of his service points this season, and those indeed are solid numbers that give him an edge. Tien, meanwhile, lags notably behind, holding 75% of service games and 61% of service points won in 2025.
However, the American holds a narrow edge on return, winning 37% of return points compared to Rublev’s 36%. Despite the Russian’s greater experience on indoor hard courts, his success rate lags. Rublev holds a 63.01% win rate on the surface, while Tien boasts an impressive 73.33%.
The clash promises to be a tightly contested one, though Rublev may ultimately hold the edge. The Russian has enjoyed a stronger season overall, compiling a 33-24 record with a title run in Doha and a runner-up finish in Hamburg.
Tien, meanwhile, reached the final most recently at the China Open but is still chasing his first title of the year. Thus, seeding, and a superior experience puts Rublev ahead.
Pick: Rublev in three sets
