Erik Spoelstra had an insightful message to share when discussing Terry Rozier and the ongoing controversy surrounding the NBA guard.
Rozier, who was arrested Thursday in connection with a federal investigation into illegal gambling and faces charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering, has put the Heat under a fair share of pressure as well as negative scrutiny.
Spoelstra was asked about Rozier, and the coach offered insights.

Spoelstra kept his thoughts on Rozier brief but showered him with praise despite the ongoing controversy.
“Obviously, we can’t comment on the situation, but Terry is somebody who’s very dear to all of us,” Spoelsta said. “He’s had a real positive impact on our locker room and the staff and players alike. That includes last year, when he wasn’t in the rotation oftentimes. (We) send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through this.”

Hearing Spoelstra passionately defend Rozier’s character may be heartwarming to fans who hope for the NBA star’s innocence to be established. While Rozier faces serious allegations, he has received a fair amount of support and sympathy from the NBA world.
The league conducted its own investigation and cleared Rozier in January of any violation of NBA rules. He played 64 games for the Heat last season and averaged 10.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.
He missed the Heat’s first two games — a 125-121 loss to the Orlando Magic in their season opener and a dominant 146-114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
The probe into Rozier was first triggered by suspicious wagering patterns on prop bets — all leaning toward the under — during a March 2023 game he played while still with the Charlotte Hornets. He exited after just 10 minutes, citing a foot injury.
Rozier isn’t the only NBA personality embroiled in the federal investigation, as Portland Trail Blazers coach and Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups was also alleged to have participated in rigged poker games, along with former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Damon Jones. The NBA has placed Billups and Rozier on leave following their arrests.
