NBA Gambling Scandal: FBI Leaves Fans Shocked After Multiple Arrests

The NBA faces a massive gambling scandal as the FBI makes multiple arrests, leaving fans stunned and the league’s integrity in question.

The 2025-26 NBA season is barely underway, yet the league is already reeling from one of its biggest controversies in recent memory. While the NBA has had its share of drama, from referee scandals to tampering investigations, this latest wave of FBI arrests has sent shockwaves far beyond the basketball world.

Early Thursday morning, whispers of a gambling probe erupted into a full-blown federal investigation, leaving fans and franchises stunned.

What Has the FBI Investigation Revealed So Far?

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was taken into custody in Orlando early Thursday morning as part of the FBI’s expanding investigation into illegal sports betting.

The arrest occurred just hours after the Heat’s matchup against the Magic, a game in which Rozier was listed as available but did not play. Federal authorities allege Rozier was linked to suspicious betting activity, with one professional bettor reportedly placing 30 bets on him within less than an hour of a 2023 game. The bettor bet the under on Rozier’s various stats, and the guard left the game after just 10 minutes, citing a foot injury.

While the original incident had been under quiet scrutiny, today’s developments confirm the situation has escalated dramatically.

“His case is connected to the betting scandal involving former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter, who was banned from the NBA in the spring of 2024 for his role in a gambling scheme around player prop bets,” ESPN reported. “Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges and admitted in court to manipulating his performance in two games during the 2023-24 season. He is awaiting sentencing in December.”

However, Rozier was not the only figure caught in the FBI’s net. In a separate report, Charania revealed that Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups has also been arrested for alleged involvement in an illegal gambling operation. Billups’ arrest was allegedly linked to high-stakes poker games that prosecutors claim were rigged by the mafia, further intensifying the controversy surrounding the case.

The breaking news did not stop there. NBA insider Pablo Torre reported that Malik Beasley, who had already been under federal investigation for gambling-related misconduct from his time with the Milwaukee Bucks, was not out of trouble yet.

Lastly, reports have also surfaced that Damon Jones, a former NBA player and assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has been formally charged in connection with the ongoing FBI investigation into illegal sports gambling involving league insiders.

Jones, who spent 11 seasons in the NBA before transitioning to coaching, is accused of allegedly leaking confidential team information that was later used by bettors to gain an unfair advantage.

Patel stated that the investigation was an extensive criminal operation. In his words, this investigation exposed a troubling overlap between professional basketball and crime networks.

“This is an illegal gambling and rigging operation that spanned the course of years. This fraud is historic in its scheme,” said Patel in a press conference (as per CBS News).

Billups, Jones, and Rozier have all been taken into federal custody as part of the ongoing investigation into illegal sports gambling activities.

Rozier’s attorney, Jim Trusty, broke his silence and released an optimistic statement defending his client.

“We have represented Terry Rozier for over a year. A long time ago, we reached out to these prosecutors to tell them we should have an open line of communication…” said Trusty, per The Athletic. “Terry was cleared by the NBA and these prosecutors revived that non-case. Terry is not a gambler, but he is not afraid of a fight, and he looks forward to winning this fight.”

How Are Fans Reacting to the Barrage of News?

The rapid succession of gambling-related arrests stunned NBA fans. With news of Billups’ arrest spreading like wildfire, one fan immediately speculated that streaming giant Netflix, which is known for producing documentaries about sports scandals, would undoubtedly capitalize on this unfolding drama.

“Netflix seeing this,” said the fan.

Others were more outraged than amused. “How can Terry Rozier possibly defend this?” one fan asked, posting a clip of Rozier from a previous game in which he appeared to fumble easy passes and miss open shots. Fans flooded the comment sections, speculating whether those questionable plays were connected to betting outcomes.

Amid the chaos, reports circulated that the Heat were desperately seeking trade partners for Rozier during the offseason and were willing to accept any offer as he entered the final year of his contract.

One fan humorously suggested that Miami orchestrated the FBI investigation to escape the financial burden of Rozier’s deal. “Miami had to call in the FBI just to get out of Rozier’s deal,” said one fan.

Others cracked jokes, trying to get certain players or executives off their team by jokingly implicating them in the gambling probe.

For example, one user posted: “I honestly don’t care if I get fired, I was apart of the Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups gambling scandal. My name is Nico Harrison and I work for the Dallas Mavericks.”

As shocking as this scandal has been, one thing is clear: the NBA has entered a new era of scrutiny.
