The 2025 NBA offseason was pure chaos. It was full of blockbuster trades, shocking signings, and teams scrambling to reshape their futures. But even among the madness, one move stood tall.
It was the record-breaking seven-team trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets and Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks to the Phoenix Suns. Just when fans thought the dust had settled, Durant again made headlines with another massive development.
How Much Will Kevin Durant Earn?
According to a recent report by ESPN’s Shams Charania, Durant and the Houston Rockets have officially agreed to a two-year $90 million contract extension. The deal includes a player option for the 2027–28 season, giving Durant the flexibility to decide his future.
Charania also noted that Durant could’ve secured a maximum extension worth $120 million. But he willingly took a pay cut to help the Rockets maintain roster flexibility and remain competitive in the long run.

So, how much is Durant earning now? In short, the 37-year-old forward isn’t just adding to his bank account; he’s making NBA history.
With this latest extension, Durant now owns the record for the highest career earnings in NBA history, totaling an incredible $598.2 million from current and future salaries. For the 2025–26 season alone, Durant is set to earn $54.7 million, and overall, he’s locked in for three years and $144.7 million.
This isn’t Durant’s first time signing a significant extension in his career. The last time he inked a long-term deal was back in 2021, during his stint with the Brooklyn Nets, when he agreed to a four-year contract worth $194.2 million. Of that amount, a staggering $189 million was guaranteed, which showed just how valuable he was considered at the time.
Interestingly, this latest contract with Houston wasn’t exactly a surprise. During NBA Media Day in September, Durant hinted that he and the Rockets were discussing a potential extension. Although he admitted he didn’t know when it would happen.
“I do see myself signing a contract extension. I can’t tell you exactly when that will happen, but I do see it happening,” said Durant during a press conference.
It’s also worth noting that Durant’s arrival in Houston came after a turbulent year in Phoenix. The Suns ended their 2024–25 season with a disappointing 36–46 record and missed the playoffs entirely.

That collapse started a wave of trade rumors around the star trio of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. Booker was seen as untouchable, Beal’s no-trade clause complicated matters, leaving Durant as the most logical trade piece. As we all know, the rumor eventually became reality.
Now, at 37, Durant is proving he’s far from done. In just two preseason games with the Rockets, he averaged 17.5 points, three rebounds, and 1.5 assists in just under 26 minutes per game while also shooting 56.5% from the field. His leadership and guidance helped Houston cruise to a perfect 4-0 preseason.
In the end, we can say that Durant continues to rewrite the rules of longevity and dominance from the chaos of a seven-team trade to becoming the NBA’s highest career earner.
