Cooper Flagg Downplays NBA Rookie of the Year Expectations Despite Being Heavy Favorite

Cooper Flagg stays humble amid Rookie of the Year buzz, focusing on team goals as the Mavs’ No. 1 pick prepares for his first NBA season.

It’s rare to see an NBA rookie walk into the league already carrying Rookie of the Year buzz. Yet Cooper Flagg isn’t just any rookie. From the moment the Dallas Mavericks selected him No. 1 overall, expectations have followed him like a spotlight.

Many believe he’s destined to own the upcoming season, but Flagg isn’t quite buying into the hype. The Duke standout has his focus somewhere else, and it’s not the award everyone’s talking about.

Cooper Flagg Keeps Focus on Team Over Trophies

When a young star like Flagg enters the NBA, the conversation often shifts quickly to individual glory. But for the 18-year-old forward, winning isn’t about personal accolades, at least not right now.

Speaking with veteran reporter Marc Stein, Flagg was asked how much importance he places on winning Rookie of the Year. His answer reflected maturity beyond his age.

“I don’t know if I am putting an incredible emphasis on it,” Flagg said. “Obviously, it’s something I really wanna strive for, you know look at it down the line, but I think, for me that will work itself out, as long as a team we do what we are supposed to do and I am able to contribute how I know I can contribute. If we have team success, the other stuff will handle itself.”

That response speaks volumes about his approach. Flagg isn’t brushing off the idea of winning the award; he’s simply prioritizing what matters most. For him, team success comes before any individual recognition. It’s a rare perspective for a player who’s already being labeled as the clear favorite to win Rookie of the Year.

The confidence around Flagg isn’t just talk. In an ESPN poll of coaches, executives, and scouts, the Mavericks’ new forward was overwhelmingly voted as the player most likely to claim the 2026 Rookie of the Year honor.

That level of belief isn’t surprising considering his college résumé. Flagg was named the 2025 National College Player of the Year, ACC Player of the Year, and ACC Rookie of the Year — all in the same season. His dominance at Duke made him one of the most NBA-ready prospects in recent memory.

Now, as he gears up for his first professional season, Flagg is in Vancouver, Canada, for the Mavericks’ training camp, which runs from September 30 to October 4. He’s projected to start right away, and with Dallas aiming for a deep playoff push, Flagg’s ability to fit alongside the team’s stars could define both his rookie year and the Mavericks’ season.

Who Could Challenge Flagg for Rookie of the Year?

Of course, being the favorite doesn’t guarantee anything. History has proven that the Rookie of the Year race can be full of surprises. Just last season, Stephon Castle, drafted fourth overall, claimed the award, not the No. 1 pick.

Flagg may lead the odds, but several names could make this year’s race interesting. Ace Bailey of the Utah Jazz, Tre Johnson of the Washington Wizards, and Kon Knueppel of the Charlotte Hornets all have strong cases heading into the season.

Knueppel, in particular, is viewed as a steady, high-floor player with immediate impact potential. FanDuel currently lists him with the sixth-best odds to win the award. While he might not have the same star ceiling as Flagg or the No. 2 overall pick, Dylan Harper, Knueppel’s efficient scoring and NBA-ready game make him a dark-horse contender.

Then there’s Tre Johnson, who might be the biggest surprise in FanDuel’s top odds. Drafted No. 6 overall by Washington, Johnson has already flashed elite scoring instincts. In just two Summer League appearances, he averaged 19.5 points while shooting 58.3% from the field — numbers that caught plenty of attention.

With the Wizards likely handing him a major offensive role, Johnson could emerge as one of the league’s best young scorers. His ability to create shots from anywhere on the floor makes him a legitimate three-level threat and perhaps Flagg’s biggest competition for the award.
