V.J. Edgecombe Makes Feelings Clear on Bold Comparison With NBA Icon Vince Carter

Philadelphia 76ers rookie V.J. Edgecombe has reacted to bold comparisons with NBA legend Vince Carter. Read to know more.

The NBA has never been short of bold comparisons. Every few years, a rookie bursts onto the scene and immediately finds himself linked to a legendary name. LeBron James was once likened to Magic Johnson for his passing brilliance, and Zion Williamson also, at one point, drew comparisons to Charles Barkley for his raw power and dominance in the paint.

Now, another name has entered that conversation. That is Philadelphia 76ers rookie V.J. Edgecombe, who is already being likened to Vince Carter, one of the most electrifying dunkers the league has ever seen.

V.J. Edgecombe Was Speechless with His New Comparison

The chatter surrounding the 20-year-old guard reached new heights after Philadelphia’s preseason opener on Thursday against the New York Knicks in Abu Dhabi. Following the game, a reporter informed Edgecombe that many fans were comparing his style and dunking flair to Carter’s.

When he learned about the comparison, Edgecombe, who was drafted third overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, smiled modestly and said, “That’s an elite comp. But I’m VJ, man. The comparison is cool.”

The parallels aren’t entirely unfounded. Carter and Edgecombe share elite athleticism that sets them apart from their peers. During his lone season at Baylor, Edgecombe showed glimpses of what makes him special, averaging 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per contest over 33 games.

Standing at 6’5”, his explosiveness in transition and ability to rise above defenders mirror the qualities that made Carter a household name during his prime. A moment in Thursday’s game also highlighted that similarity perfectly when Edgecombe attacked the baseline and went airborne against Knicks center Mitchell Robinson.

Though Robinson contested, Edgecombe fearlessly attempted a thunderous dunk that immediately recalled Carter’s unforgettable poster over France’s Frederic Weis in the 2000 Olympics.

Beyond the highlight moments, Edgecombe put together a respectable stat line in his NBA preseason debut. In 31 minutes, he tallied 14 points, six rebounds, and three assists. He wasn’t particularly efficient from the floor as he shot 4-of-13 and just 1-of-6 from three, but he made up for it by sinking all five of his free throws. Despite his efforts, the Sixers couldn’t pull out the win.

Philadelphia’s struggles were evident from the start. The score was tied after the first quarter, but by halftime, the Knicks had opened up a 10-point lead. Things unraveled further in the third period, where the Sixers managed just 14 points. A late push in the fourth, where they scored 27 points, wasn’t enough to change the outcome as they fell 99-84.

Now all eyes will be on Oct. 4, when the Sixers and Knicks square off once again in Abu Dhabi. Whether or not Edgecombe continues to invite Carter comparisons, one thing is clear: the rookie is already turning heads.
