J.J. Redick Sends 3-Word Message About LeBron James’ Availability for Lakers’ Opening Night After Injury

Los Angeles Lakers head coach J.J. Redick makes a statement about LeBron James' availability for the team's opening night.

The Los Angeles Lakers have hit a roadblock even before the 2024-25 preseason begins. And with the team banking on Luka Dončić and LeBron James to bring home their 18th franchise title, a small bump in the road can cost them their entire campaign.

Unfortunately, the roadblocks have begun with a possible injury to James, effectively jeopardizing the start of their new season.

J.J. Redick Reacts to LeBron James’ Injury Before Lakers’ Opening Night

Due to a minor glute injury, James was sidelined from the team’s training camp on Tuesday. And while the extent of James’ injury isn’t known, head coach J.J. Redick is keeping hope as the new season approaches.

When asked about James’ availability, Redick said: “That’s the goal”.

According to Redick, James has suffered from “a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute”. Redick added that they are aiming for him to be back by the Golden State Warriors game. However, they are yet to rule him out for the Lakers’ preseason games.

“It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading into opening night for him,” Redick said. “Obviously in Year 23, it’s uncharted territory here.”

“It’ll be a slower process with him leading into the first game. He’s obviously got 22 years so far of wear and tear on the body, and he’s dealing with a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute. So, we’re just playing the long game with LeBron.”

That being said, there’s ample buzz around James’ historic 23rd season. Rumors of retirement have been around for years, with James dodging the questions for multiple campaigns.

Of course, the four-time NBA icon has been playing at a high level for multiple years. Last season, James scored 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game while shooting 51.3% from the field.

James Speaks Up on Lakers Training Camp

That being said, James himself isn’t sure about his training camp availability.

Despite high expectations, James isn’t where he wants to be with his health.

“I’m still ramping things back up,” James said. “I’m not where I want to be. But I mean, I don’t want to be where I want to be right now in September. So, I got some time and I’m looking forward to the process of getting there.”

Of course, James’ health will directly impact the Lakers’ output this season. The team has been focused on winning another title, the entire campaign resting on James and DonÄŤić ‘s shoulders.

The Lakers’ preseason games will start on Friday, October 3.
