Lakers Legend Reveals Striking Similarity Between Luka Dončić and 5-Time NBA Champion Magic Johnson

A Lakers legend spots a rare skill linking Luka Dončić to Magic Johnson. Could LA’s new star be following in a Hall of Famer’s footsteps?

The Los Angeles Lakers have always been home to larger-than-life stars, and Luka Dončić is now the face carrying that legacy forward. While the Slovenian guard has already carved out his own historic path in the NBA, a Lakers legend sees something more in him, something that echoes back to the golden days of the Showtime era.

James Worthy, Hall of Fame forward and three-time champion, believes Dončić shares a key trait with none other than Magic Johnson himself.

James Worthy Draws Parallel Between Luka Dončić and Magic Johnson

James Worthy was recently speaking on the “Mason & Ireland” podcast when he drew a striking comparison between Dončić and his former teammate and five-time NBA champion, Magic Johnson. Worthy pointed out that the two players share a unique quality that sets them apart from their peers.

“The one thing Magic and Luka have in common is that they can take a snapshot. Both of them are really good rebounders. They get that rebound and take a quick shot of the whole floor going down,” Worthy said. “And then their ability to calculate their steps and know where you are going to be.”

Worthy’s quote highlights how both Johnson and Dončić use their size and awareness to dictate the flow of the game. Magic, at 6’9,” revolutionized the point guard role with his ability to rebound like a forward and pass like no one else.

Dončić, at 6’6″ carries that same duality. He rebounds, surveys the floor, and fires passes into windows that few others can see.

As Worthy describes, this similarity isn’t just about vision but anticipation. Both players can process the chaos of a fast break in an instant, deciding not only where teammates are but also where they will be. That instinct made Johnson the conductor of the Showtime Lakers and is now what makes Dončić the centerpiece of the modern squad.

What’s Dončić’s Role in Carrying the Lakers Legacy

Dončić and Magic may belong to different basketball eras, but their impact is measured by the same standard in Los Angeles: championships. Worthy’s comments underline the expectation that Dončić is more than just a stat-stuffer — he is tasked with turning his brilliance into banners.

Dončić has already proven he can put on historic performances. He is one of only ten players in league history to score 70 points in a game, and in 2024, he carried the Dallas Mavericks all the way to the NBA Finals.

The Lakers traded for him with the belief that his next step is winning it all, and that belief was underscored when he signed a three-year, $165 million extension with the franchise.

Lakers management has made it clear they are building with urgency. Pairing Dončić with LeBron James gives Los Angeles a superstar duo, and the front office is moving aggressively to shape a roster capable of contending.

For Dončić, that means balancing his role as one of the league’s most prolific offensive players with the responsibility of leadership.

But this is not the first time Dončić has been likened to Johnson. Mavericks legend Tyson Chandler once said, “I would always call him Luka Magic because he reminded me of a European version of Magic Johnson.” Even Johnson himself has weighed in, noting both the opportunity and the pressure that comes with being a Laker.

“Luka, it’s great what you did in Dallas. But the difference is, in Los Angeles, we expect championships. And we expect our superstars to lead us to a championship. LeBron has already done that. Now we want Luka to do the same thing,” Johnson said on ESPN’s “Get Up.”

Johnson’s words echo the heart of the comparison. Dončić may share traits with Magic, but in Los Angeles, likeness isn’t enough. What matters is delivering results, and that is nothing less than championships.
