Mario Cristobal Again Reminds Georgia Fans of What They Missed in Carson Beck, Announces Miami Scheme

When Carson Beck left Georgia and headed to Miami, some were left confused. However, his new head coach cleared up any remaining questions.

As Miami quarterback Carson Beck continues to excel, his head coach, Mario Cristobal, delivered a message to fans of Beck’s former school, the University of Georgia. The transfer portal is a tool for schools to improve their roster immediately.

Similarly, players can enhance their bank account and potential playing time. When a highly touted player changes schools, the fans from the school they left occasionally cheer the departure or deride the player due to what they perceive as subpar play.

Miami HC Mario Cristobal Praises QB Carson Beck, Shades Georgia

Beck left Athens for Miami, in what many considered a no-brainer. First, Miami offered Beck $4 million to trade North Georgia for South Beach. Next, Beck escaped the heavy criticism for what fans and media perceive as failings.

Beck won 88.9% of his games at Georgia. In addition, he connected on 68% of his passes for 7,912 yards with 58 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. Cristobal appeared as a guest on “The Pat McAfee Show” to discuss his quarterback.

“Three games in, we feel awesome about the progress. When you watch him on film, in ’23 he had a phenomenal year, and in ’24 he did have a good year, but the pieces weren’t in place like he had them in ’23.”

“The scheme morphed into something different. We felt, with our offensive line, our skill players, our running game, and just surrounding him with a certain type of environment, that he could really thrive in it. The guy’s a competitor, an awesome teammate, and a natural leader.”

While he did not overtly say it, Cristobal blamed Beck’s season on the lack of talent surrounding him and changes to the scheme. Granted, Beck’s completion percentage dipped from 72.4% to 64.7%. If he had not changed his approach from setup to scanning to release to delivery, other factors like player changes and scheme alterations could have played a significant part in the struggles.

After three games, Beck connected on 79.3% of his passes, which leads all of FBS. Plus, his 9.9 yards per attempt and 185.74 rating lead the ACC.

The Miami head coach emphasized that the environment surrounding Beck was different. Similarly, Beck echoed the coach’s thoughts in this interview with UGA Wire. His concerns about the talent could resonate because Georgia is known for a big-play offense behind a stout defense. With eyes to the future, will the Miami version of Beck play better than the Georgia one?
