The conspiracy surrounding Steve Ballmer, Kawhi Leonard, and the Los Angeles Clippers continues to gain attention this offseason. Ballmer is the richest owner in the league and the team’s controlling figure.
After a company called Aspiration recently declared bankruptcy, several suspicious links between the company and Ballmer emerged, prompting calls for the NBA to investigate him for attempting to circumvent salary cap rules to pay Leonard additional money.
How Deep Do the Steve Ballmer and Los Angeles Clippers’ Aspiration Connections Run?
Using Aspiration to pay Leonard millions of dollars under the table represents a move that could be severely penalized if investigated and verified. However, the Clippers’ association with Aspiration extends beyond these allegations. The two parties were reportedly on the verge of granting Aspiration the naming rights for what is now known as the Intuit Dome.
Senior NBA insider Ramona Shelburne revealed that Aspiration placed a huge bid to acquire those rights. However, Ballmer and the Clippers rejected Aspiration’s offer to sign a deal with Intuit instead, granting them naming rights for the team’s new building. According to Shelburne’s reporting, Aspiration was willing to pay nearly twice the $550 million that Intuit offered.
Reporting on NBA Today: According to Clippers sources, Aspiration bid almost double the $550 million that Intuit successfully bid for the naming rights to the new building. The Clippers chose to go with the more well-established company & brand. pic.twitter.com/fqHvAM5UYu

“Steve Ballmer mentioned on that interview that Aspiration tried to bid on the naming rights of what became the Intuit Dome….They were turned down because the Clippers, this was Ballmer’s explanation, they wanted to go with Intuit, which is a long-standing company…”
What Could These Naming Rights Decisions Mean for Ballmer’s Investigation?
Since Ballmer is also being accused of funneling money through Aspiration to pay Leonard, some fans have formed theories suggesting that Ballmer urged Aspiration to enter this bid just to force Intuit, or other competitors, to pay a higher price for the naming rights to the team’s home arena.

If that proves to be the case, Ballmer could face serious consequences. However, the Clippers’ owner insists he has nothing to hide and has granted the league access to all conversations and communication with Aspiration.
As things stand, this looks like a long and tedious process. Although there is no way to know if Ballmer is truly guilty, he is expected to pay a fine for attempting to work around the rules. Fans are left wondering what the league’s investigation will reveal and how it will impact the Clippers’ performance heading into the 2025-26 NBA season.
