Is Dirk Nowitzki Unhappy With the Dallas Mavericks?

Nowitzki retired after the 2018-19 NBA season and is widely viewed as the greatest player in franchise history, having led the Mavericks to their 2011 NBA championship. While he remained involved with the organization even after his playing career ended, things have changed significantly over the past few seasons.

The recent organizational changes have put former players like Nowitzki in a difficult position. Although Mavericks fans were free to heavily criticize Nico Harrison and the other upper management for the decision to trade away Luka Dončić to the Lakers in return for Anthony Davis, former players were unable to display their thoughts and feelings on the issue freely.

After all, stars such as Nowitzki owe a lot of their financial success and loyal fanbase to the Mavericks organization. Regardless of his relationship with Dončić and personal thoughts on the NBA superstar being traded, Nowitzki has continued to support the Mavericks publicly.

However, the former Mavericks star discussed his current relationship with the organization during a recent interview. He revealed that he appears to be slowly transitioning away from the organization, especially with his own interest in broadcasting.

“I’m not too involved in front office decisions these days… I try to go to practice a lot… it felt a little weird… not knowing my role. So since then, I’ve kind of pulled back again… I’ve met with Patrick, I’ve met with Nico over the years. I’m not really part of the day-to-day business… Now obviously me going into some broadcasting, I’ll be super busy starting here in October with the season.”

What Role Did Ownership Changes Play in Nowitzki’s Decision?

Since the Mavericks changed ownership from Mark Cuban to the Adelson family, Nowitzki has seen changes in the team at various levels. That shift might have played a role in his decision to move on from his involvement with the franchise. The organizational restructuring has left many longtime figures uncertain about their place within the new hierarchy.

Additionally, Nowitzki received a very attractive career proposition that made stepping back from the Mavericks easier. Fans might be stunned to hear that Nowitzki is on the verge of starting a new career as a studio analyst for Amazon Prime Video’s new NBA coverage.

The 2011 NBA Finals MVP will be covering 66 games in the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season. This represents a significant commitment that will naturally limit his availability for Mavericks-related activities.

Nowitzki is not the only former NBA star hired by Amazon Prime to cover games. Alongside himself, the network has also brought on Blake Griffin, a star best known for his time with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Dallas legend is no stranger to the media and has appeared on shows such as “Inside the NBA” as a guest. However, this new role represents his first full-time broadcasting commitment. Fans are left wondering how he will perform in his first year as a studio analyst for Amazon Prime.

Perhaps more importantly for Mavericks supporters, they’re questioning whether Nowitzki’s absence from the organization will have any noticeable impact. The franchise is navigating significant changes both on and off the court, and losing the steady presence of its greatest player adds another layer of uncertainty to an already turbulent period.
