Ben Simmons has remained a free agent throughout the 2025 NBA Offseason. While the former No. 1 pick and three-time All-Star is far from the player he once was, it is surprising that he has remained on the free market.
There’s no telling what the future holds, but recent indications have been that Simmons may never play again in the NBA.
Why Did Ben Simmons Part Ways With His Agent As He Contemplates His Future?
Marc Stein reported via his X account that Simmons’ agent has parted ways with him, which has very strong implications for his NBA future.
As Ben Simmons decides his next career steps, I’m told Bernie Lee has notified @TheNBPA that he has formally removed himself from the union’s ledger as Simmons’ agent.

Nothing is confirmed until it’s official, but Simmons’ parting ways with his agent sounds like good proof that he might be hanging it up. It’s been a rough couple of years for Simmons. His very public fallout with the Philadelphia 76ers was not a good look, and even when that was taken care of, it took him quite a while to play for the Brooklyn Nets.
When he did, Simmons looked like a shell of himself. While he still maintained a lot of the skills he had as an NBA player, his athleticism was a far cry from what it once was, which hindered his effectiveness.
His natural skills was what made him a star to begin with, so when that was gone, it made relegated him to more of a role player. Simmons wasn’t bad for the Nets or the Los Angeles Clippers, but his inability to stay on the floor and his diminished abilities were sad given that it wasn’t that long ago that he was considered the future face of the NBA.
But hey, if this is it for Simmons, at least he got paid before he hung it up. No one batted an eye when the Sixers gave him that max extension in 2019, but it unquestionably turned into one of the worst NBA contracts in the last decade.
It’s amazing to think that at this time a decade ago, Simmons came in as one of the most hyped draft prospects the NBA had seen in years. Now, not even 10 seasons into his NBA career, it looks like the Ben Simmons experience might be over. Love or hate him, his career is one that people will never forget.
