Mark Cuban Reveals the Real Reason a Mavericks Legend Took Luka Dončić’s Beer in Viral Incident

Mark Cuban explains why Michael Finley took Luka Dončić’s beer in a viral clip, shedding light on the incident.

One of the most talked-about clips from the Dallas Mavericks’ 2024 playoff run wasn’t a highlight reel or a buzzer-beater. It was Luka Dončić’s beer being swiped away in the tunnel. The video sparked a frenzy online, feeding narratives about Dončić’s habits and his strained relationship with the front office.

Now, Mark Cuban, former principal owner of the Mavericks, has finally explained what really happened, and his version of events paints a very different picture than the one fans thought they saw.

What Really Happened When Michael Finley Took Luka Dončić’s Beer?

The incident happened right after the Mavericks secured the Western Conference crown against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Dončić, fresh off being named Finals MVP of the series, was talking to his father, beer in hand, when Mavericks VP of Basketball Operations Michael Finley stepped in and took it away.

Dončić’s shocked expression lit up social media, and fans instantly spun it into a bigger drama. Cuban, however, says the truth was much simpler. During his appearance on The Arena with Gilbert Arenas, Cuban cleared the air.

“I was standing right there. I was fine with it, right? And it wasn’t because he didn’t want him to drink it. It was because there were cameras everywhere, you know, and just not cool when a player’s doing an interview with a beer. Michael wasn’t worried about, oh, you’re going to gain weight or any of that sh**. Like, if he didn’t do it, I would have done it. It was more about cameras rolling,” Cuban explained.

He emphasized that Finley wasn’t trying to discipline Dončić or comment on his lifestyle. The move was purely about optics with media obligations coming up.

“You’re going to need to be talking, and nobody needs to know that you’re drinking a beer. How many times have you seen a player do an interview with a beer in his hand? Finals is cool, right? Because we had just lost and you were going to have to do interviews. So I agreed with it. I thought Finn did the right thing. I was standing right there. If I thought it was wrong, I’d be like, get him another one.”

Cuban even added that, had it been the Finals or a post-championship scene, it might have been different. But in that setting, minutes before interviews, he thought Finley made the right move.

How Did This Moment Shape Dončić’s Path to the Lakers?

The short clip of Finley taking Dončić’s beer quickly spread online. To many fans, it looked like more than just a funny or awkward moment. It became a symbol of the tension between Dončić and the Mavericks organization.

Not long after, those rumors seemed to gain weight. Reports claimed the Mavericks were worried about Dončić’s lifestyle — his late nights, drinking, and even hookah sessions. Some suggested that if he didn’t change, his career might decline within a few years.

When the Mavericks later traded Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers

, one of the biggest moves in NBA history, fans connected the dots. That beer incident was remembered as one of the first cracks in Dončić’s relationship with the Mavericks.

But the story didn’t end there. Since arriving in Los Angeles, Dončić has transformed both physically and professionally. He reportedly shed 31 pounds thanks to a strict regimen: a gluten-free, low-sugar diet, heavy protein intake, and daily shakes.

His new leaner frame landed him the digital cover of Men’s Health in the summer of 2025. This same summer, he signed a $165 million extension with the Lakers, cementing his new chapter as the face of the franchise.

On the court, Dončić hasn’t slowed down either. Fresh from the NBA grind, he exploded for 39 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists for Slovenia against France at EuroBasket 2025, reminding everyone that his game remains as electrifying as ever.

For Cuban, though, the infamous beer incident was never about Dončić’s conditioning or discipline. It was about optics in a moment where cameras were everywhere. While fans may always replay that viral clip as a symbol of the Dončić-Mavericks breakup, Cuban insists it was nothing more than a protective move by Finley to keep his star player looking professional before the inevitable media circus.
