‘The Ones Who Were Booing’ — Daniil Medvedev’s Opponent Benjamin Bonzi Takes a Swipe at Raging US Open Crowd As Blair Henley Interviews

Benjamin Bonzi took a jab at the rowdy crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the first round of the 2025 US Open.

Benjamin Bonzi took a jab at the rowdy crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the first round of the 2025 US Open. This was their third encounter on the ATP Tour, with all three matches occurring in the first round of a Grand Slam, and the Frenchman has won each time.

Leading up to the New York Major, Bonzi competed at the 2025 Cincinnati Masters, where he defeated Matteo Arnaldi, Lorenzo Musetti, and Stefanos Tsitsipas before losing to Félix Auger-Aliassime in the fourth round.

What Did Benjamin Bonzi Say After His Win Over Daniil Medvedev at the 2025 US Open 1R?

At the 2025 US Open, Bonzi kicked off his campaign by beating the 13th seed, Medvedev, in the first round, winning with a scoreline of 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4. However, the match was not without its fair share of drama.

During the third set, while Bonzi was preparing to serve on match point, a photographer ran onto the court, causing a disruption. As a result, the chair umpire, Greg Allensworth, allowed Bonzi an additional first serve. This decision did not sit well with Medvedev, who then prompted the crowd to boo his opponent.

After the match, Bonzi spoke with Blair Henley during the post-match interview on the court. Henley, a Texas native, has spent the last decade involved in tennis media as a writer, editor, host, and emcee.

While speaking with Henley, Bonzi described the contest against Medvedev as “crazy.” He noted that the crowd’s “wild” energy played an important role, stating that those who booed him actually helped him win, as their jeers motivated him to perform better.

“I have no idea. It was crazy. I may have got some new fans, but there are also some new non-fans. The energy was wild. Thanks for all the ones who were who were booing. Thanks for the energy in the fifth. It was a crazy match point in the third, then crazy scenario, exhausted in the fourth, and gave all I had in the final set. Crazy win,” Bonzi said.

Interestingly, at the 2019 US Open, the crowd also booed Medvedev during a match, and he later remarked that their boos helped him secure victory.

Medvedev went on to reach the first Grand Slam final of his career, finishing as the runner-up after losing to Rafael Nadal.

Who Will Bonzi Face at the 2025 US Open Second Round?

After his victory over Medvedev in the first round of the 2025 US Open, Bonzi is set to face Marcos Giron in the second round of the tournament.

Before starting his campaign at the New York Major, Giron participated in four North American hard-court tournaments: the 2025 Citi DC Open, the Canadian Open, the Cincinnati Open, and the Winston-Salem Open.

In Washington, D.C., Toronto, and Ohio, the former World No. 37 was defeated in the first round by Jaume Munar, Adrian Mannarino, and Alexander Blockx, respectively. In North Carolina, Mariano Navone eliminated him in the second round.

Bonzi and Giron have never faced each other on the ATP Tour, which makes their upcoming second-round match at the 2025 US Open a first encounter. The winner will advance to the third round of the Grand Slam and will face either the 18th seed, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, or Arthur Rinderknech.
