Kelsey Mitchell Reacts to Fever Teammates Endorsing Her for WNBA MVP With Viral T-Shirt Gesture

Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with a team-high 27 points, but it wasn't enough as they went down 95-90 to the Minnesota Lynx.

The scene at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday told a story of loyalty and recognition. As the Indiana Fever prepared to take the court, Kelsey Mitchell’s teammates and coaches made a statement that went beyond basketball.

They wore custom MVP shirts supporting their veteran guard’s candidacy, a gesture that meant everything to a player who has anchored the franchise through its toughest stretches.

The gesture carried extra weight given the circumstances. With superstars Caitlin Clark, Sydney Colson, and Sophie Cunningham all sidelined by injuries, much of the scoring load has fallen on Mitchell’s shoulders. She responded with a team-high 27 points against the Minnesota Lynx, but it wasn’t enough as Indiana fell 95-90 in a heartbreaking loss.

How Did Kelsey Mitchell React to Her Teammates’ MVP Support?

Speaking to reporters after the tough loss, Mitchell couldn’t hide her emotions about the pregame show of support. “It was fun, and I am very humbled,” Mitchell said, according to IndyStar’s Brian Haenchen.

“I was grateful for my group. I love the people I play with, and knowing that they would go out of their way to make something like that happen for me means a lot more than people realize. Because I have been here the longest, I have everything that people talk about.”

The recognition meant even more because of her history with the franchise. Mitchell added that the Fever organization has always valued her loyalty to the team. “That value means everything to me, and anybody who knows me, I’m a loyal type of person. I’m going to forever look at them like friends after something like that.”

What Challenges Did the Fever Face Against Minnesota?

The Fever entered Friday’s contest with just nine players available for rotation, a shortage that became even more concerning when guard Odyssey Sims appeared to injure herself during the game. Despite the depleted roster, Indiana fought hard against a talented Lynx squad.

Mitchell’s 27 points and five assists, combined with Lexie Hull’s 23 points, kept the Fever competitive throughout the night. However, a devastating third quarter proved to be their undoing. The Lynx outscored Indiana 32-17 in that frame, building a lead that would hold up despite a furious 21-point rally in the fourth quarter.

Mitchell’s performance continues to showcase why she deserves MVP consideration. She averages 20.4 points, 1.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.2 blocks in 35 games this season while shooting 45.1% from the field, 38.6% from the 3-point line, and 77.0% from the charity stripe. Her offensive consistency has kept the Fever in contention for a postseason berth.

The loss drops Indiana to 19-17 with eight games remaining in the regular season. The teams will meet again on Sunday, with the action moving to Minnesota. For Mitchell and the Fever, stringing together wins in these final contests will be crucial to securing a playoff ticket and giving their MVP candidate a chance to showcase her talents on the postseason stage.
