Rose, a Chicago native, captivated the league by becoming its youngest MVP in 2011, and for a moment, it seemed he was destined to bring a championship back to the city before injuries changed his career forever.
Now, the Bulls are ensuring his impact is never forgotten. The team announced plans to retire Rose’s number and send his jersey to the rafters to hang alongside the greatest players in team history.
Why Is Derrick Rose’s Jersey Being Retired?
While most fans celebrated the news, some critics questioned the decision, pointing to Rose’s injuries and the fact that his peak dominance was relatively brief. Rose’s most devastating injury was an ACL tear during the 2012 playoffs that caused him to miss the entire 2012-13 season. After returning from that injury, he tore his meniscus in both knees. The team confirmed that Rose’s No. 1 jersey will be raised to the United Center rafters on Jan. 24, 2026. It is expected to join the four other jerseys that have received this distinction: Jerry Sloan’s No. 4, Bob Love’s No. 10, Scottie Pippen’s No. 33, and Michael Jordan’s No. 23.

The honor places Rose in truly elite company. Sloan and Love were cornerstones for the Bulls in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Sloan averaged 14 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, while Love posted career averages of 17.6 points and 5.9 rebounds.
Although neither star delivered a title to Chicago, their individual dominance and multiple All-Star selections made them franchise legends. Meanwhile, Jordan and Pippen are remembered as the iconic duo that led the Bulls to six NBA championships in the 1990s.
Since the Jordan era ended, the Bulls have not come close to winning another championship. However, many believe the team had its best chance with a healthy Rose leading the way. That group may have even reached the NBA Finals if not for the powerhouse Miami Heat, led by LeBron James.
