After landing Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs quickly began to build around the French superstar.
They drafted former Connecticut guard Stephon Castle with the fourth-overall pick in the 2024 Draft. This year, they traded for De’Aaron Fox at the deadline. The Spurs acquired him from the Kings in a deal that involved the Chicago Bulls (The Kings acquired Zach LaVine and six draft picks (three firsts and three seconds), while the Spurs received Fox and Jordan McLaughlin and the Bulls landed Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Kevin Huerter and got their own first round pick back from the Spurs).
San Antonio was reportedly Fox’s preferred landing spot, allowing him to pair up with Victor Wembanyama on a contending team. Castle went on to win the 2024-2025 Rookie of the Year Award while Fox played in just 17 games for the Spurs, averaging 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game in San Antonio.
Although it was a drop-off from his normal production (Fox averaged 25.0 points, 6.1 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game in 45 games with the Sacramento Kings last season), it was easy to see how many in the organization could see Fox as a great veteran for a young Spurs team.

How Much Will De’Aaron Fox Make After the Extension With the Spurs?
However, with Castle already locking down on guard spot, the Spurs won the right to make the second-overall selection and picked Rutgers guard Dylan Harper, another guard. The pick fueled rumors that Fox could be on his way out of San Antonio. The Spurs’ actions on Monday made it pretty clear that is not the case, at least for now.
Instead, the Spurs took care of Fox on Monday, signing him to a massive four-year, $229 million extension.

According to cap expert Bobby Marks, the first year of the extension will start in the last year of Wembanyama’s deal.

Fox will make $51.0 million during the 2026-27 season, the first year the contract kicks in, and $63.3 million during the final year of the deal over the course of the 2029-30 season. Fox agreed to a five-year, $163 million deal entering the 2021-2022 season and will make $37,096,620 during the 2025-26 season.
The Spurs believe Fox, an All-Star during the 2022-2023 season as a reserve for the Western Conference, will have great chemistry with the squad’s reshaped roster and help their younger players develop. This could potentially help the Spurs make their jump to the postseason quicker than many expect.
