Luka Dončić is a certified star in the NBA. Although Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison might not agree with this statement, the same cannot be said for the Jordan brand.
Dončić kicked off Jordan’s “The One” Tour, a campaign that aims to spotlight rising athletes in 1-on-1 competition, in New York on July 29. The multi-city campaign continued in Chicago as fans were wooed by the new face of the Los Angeles Lakers and, seemingly, the Jordan brand.
As the Slovenian superstar appeared in the city where the Jordan name is revered, fans gave him the ultimate praise, drawing parallels to the great Michael Jordan.
What prompted the Luka-Jordan comparison?
During his visit to Chicago, Dončić also made a pit stop at Dunbar High School for an event hosted by Project Swish Chicago. The five-time All-Star was greeted by “Luka” chants as he entered the gym, and the young fans were visibly stunned by his appearance.

Highlighting the weight of his presence, fans reacted swiftly, drawing parallels between Dončić and Jordan. And while the comparisons might be described as a bit of a reach by some, Dončić’s resume in the league makes them far from hollow.
This man is moving like MJ out this mug.
Tryna be an icon.
Lets Go Luka

Not only did Dončić lead the Mavericks to the NBA Finals against all odds in 2024, but he has consistently been among the top individual performers in the league since his rookie year. The Slovenian has earned five All-NBA First Team selections so far, missing the mark only twice in his career.
These phenomenal performances makes fans believe that he could evolve the game through influence.
Face of the League.

Agreed, Dončić has a long way to go before entering legitimate comparisons to the GOAT. However, with the dominant guard still only 26, there is potential to be the face of the league for many years to come.
Where is Luka Dončić headed next on “The One” Tour?
After New York and Chicago, “The One” tour will now move to Los Angeles on Sunday, where the fans might have a treat in store.
The timing and locations of the tour, particularly the final stop in L.A., could be seen as a strategic lead-up to Dončić signing a contract extension with the Lakers. Dončić will become eligible to sign a new deal on August 2, 2025, and the tour’s finale in L.A. presents the perfect opportunity for the Lakers to flaunt their new star.

One of the fans even pointed out how the coverage around Dončić has changed ever since his move to the Lakers, highlighting the market dynamics of the league. While Dončić was widely popular even during his time in Dallas, a move to arguably the biggest market in the NBA has taken it further.
When Luka was a Maverick, I dont recall this level of coverage. Laker Luka is a totally different phenomenon.

The best a fan commented was to give out his head-to-head stats with another great LeBron James, affirming why younger people would choose Dončić.

Whether or not the extension is signed this Sunday, the Lakers have certainly found their star for the future.
