The Dallas Mavericks selected highly touted prospect Copper Flagg with the first pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Surprisingly, the Mavericks only had a 1.8% chance of winning the draft lottery.
This past season, the Mavericks parted ways with Luka Dončić in a shocking trade with the Los Angeles Lakers. Since they lost in the Play-In Tournament, the move indirectly contributed to their lottery eligibility.
Nonetheless, Dončić had been considered the franchise’s future, and Flagg certainly has the potential to fill those shoes.
Mavericks Reignite Hope With No. 1 Pick Cooper Flagg, Strategic Additions in 2025 Offseason
Flagg’s arrival signals a new era for the Mavericks, blending future promise with a commitment to remaining competitive in the present. PFSN gave Dallas an A-minus for its offseason, citing him as “a generational prospect who brings excitement back for the fanbase.”
A 6’9″ forward from Duke, Flagg will serve as a two-way threat for the Mavericks, which is something that the defensively-challenged Dončić often fell short of truly doing. With defensive versatility and high IQ, Flagg seems highly capable of complementing his impressive offense on a consistent basis.
Mavericks star guard Kyrie Irving will likely miss extended portions of the upcoming season as he recovers from his ACL injury. However, by having signed him to a three-year contract extension this offseason, it’s clear the team has faith in a full recovery.
Dallas also made a prudent free-agent signing in D’Angelo Russell. Russell will not only help fill the void created by Irving’s absence, but he could also complement Flagg as a playmaker and as an offensive threat in the backcourt.
The Mavericks also invested in frontcourt continuity by re-signing center Daniel Gafford, a move that also provides key depth, considering Anthony Davis’ return timeline remains uncertain following recent eye surgery.
The Mavericks’ lone notable departure was Spencer Dinwiddie, but the presence of Russell, Ryan Nembhard, and eventually, Irving, essentially renders that moot.
With the current roster, the Mavericks are a mix of veterans and rising talent, offering experience and defensive punch. But Flagg’s trajectory could ultimately determine this team’s ceiling.
Flagg Raises Expectations With College Accolades, Summer League Play
The Mavericks have already shut down Flagg after two Summer League games. Even though he struggled in his debut against the Los Angeles Lakers his facilitating and defense were impressive. He then bounced back on the scoreboard in the second game against the San Antonio Spurs, scoring 31 points.
Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game in his lone year at Duke.
He swept the ACC Player of the Year and ACC Rookie of the Year awards, joining the notable trio of Zion Williamson, Marvin Bagley III, and Jahlil Okafor as the only players in ACC history to win both in the same season.
Even before these accomplishments, NBA superstar Kevin Durant had already hailed Flagg’s poise after he impressed in a scrimmage as a member of the 2024 USA Basketball Men’s Select Team, which trained with LeBron James and Stephen Curry.
If the rookie phenom delivers early and the veterans stay healthy, Dallas could re-emerge as a serious threat in the Western Conference. He has delivered on big stages so far, but whether he does it on the grandest one remains to be seen.
