Over the years, LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers have had a complex relationship built on a shared desire to win championships and, more recently, tension. According to a report by ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst, James has reportedly felt undervalued by the Lakers as the team begins to shift its focus toward developing around Luka Dončić.
LeBron James Reportedly Unsatisfied With Lakers, Wants More Respect
Shelburne and Windhorst reported that James is aware the Lakers are prioritizing Luka Dončić in their future plans, but he feels overlooked considering he chose to join the team and played a key role in taking them from the bottom to a title in 2020.
“James understood the Lakers taking advantage of an opportunity to pivot to the younger superstar,” the report read. “But from James’ perspective, nuance was sometimes lost during the transition.”

From James’ perspective, it was personal, not just about basketball. When he signed with the Lakers in 2018, the team was experiencing its worst postseason drought. Despite that, he led the team to its 17th NBA title two years later.
But fans aren’t exactly rallying behind him.
Fans React to James Being Unhappy, Point to Bronny James Pick
Fans took to social media shortly after the rumor was made public to vent their outrage at the idea that LeBron might not feel valued. The primary point of contention? Bronny James, his son, was picked by the Lakers, making them the first active father-son duo in NBA history.
“They literally drafted his son,” one fan said.
Another echoed that sentiment: “‘Didn’t fully appreciate him’? Bro, they drafted your son so you could play together.”
Some fans took it further, comparing LeBron’s Lakers run to other eras. “The Lakers won more championships and playoff series the last six years of Kobe’s career than they have the entirety of Bron’s tenure btw,” one user said.
Others questioned whether LeBron is struggling to accept a new role late in his career. “They’ve literally bent over backwards for LBJ since he’s been there. He’s just upset that for the first time in his career he’s had to sit on the passenger side,” one comment read.
At 40, LeBron continues to compete at a high level. Following their first-round playoff exit in 2024-25, the Lakers strengthened their center depth and are reportedly exploring trade options to reinforce their core.
