Mavericks Rookie Cooper Flagg Sends a Heartfelt Message After Devastating Floods in Texas Hill Country

Cooper Flagg leads the Dallas Mavericks into Summer League action, opening with heartfelt words for Texas flood victims as he prepares for his NBA debut.

In the midst of all the NBA offseason drama, tragedy has struck the nation in the form of the Texas Hill Country floods. When asked about his expectations heading into the Summer League, rookie Cooper Flagg showed exactly why it’s “more than just a game.”

How Did Cooper Flagg Respond to the Texas Floods Tragedy?

As a reporter began asking questions to the Duke alum and 2025 NBA Draft No. 1 overall pick, Flagg had his priorities straight. He first offered his prayers to those affected by the floods in Texas.

“Yeah, first, I just want to say that my thoughts and prayers are with the families that were affected in this situation this past weekend out here,” Flagg said.

The recent Texas Hill Country floods went on for three days after starting on July 4, 2025. They brought unimaginable sorrow, particularly to Kerr County. Fueled by torrential rains and intensified by Tropical Storm Barry’s remnants, the region’s steep terrain funneled water into deadly, rapid flash floods.

Over 100 lives were tragically lost, with at least 87 in Kerr County. Heartbreakingly, many of the casualties were children at summer camps, including the hardest hit, Camp Mystic. The sheer speed of the rising waters left little time for escape and left countless families grappling with immense, sudden loss.

Sensitive to the plight of the fanbase, Flagg made sure to pay his respects and remind us there’s nothing bigger than life.

What Are Flagg’s Expectations for Summer League?

After addressing the tragedy, Flagg respectfully continued to answer the reporter’s question. He briefly spoke on his expectations heading into Vegas. “I’m excited, I’ve been in the gym with the guys, got to know a bunch of them so I’m excited to just get out there, get back on the court and play some five-on-five,” said the No. 1 overall pick.

The Dallas Mavericks enter the Summer League with significant promise, largely thanks to the highly anticipated debut of Flagg. The versatile two-way forward is expected to be the focal point of the team, showcasing just why he’s considered one of the greatest prospects to enter the league.

Complementing him are two-way contract signees Ryan Nembhard, a skilled playmaker, and Miles Kelly, a dynamic scorer, alongside other intriguing prospects like the towering Jamarion Sharp. This exciting young core positions the Mavericks as a team to watch, eager to develop talent and make an impact.

While the Mavericks are far from favorites heading into Vegas, Flagg’s mentality and an exciting squad make them an entertaining watch in the league starting July 10.
