The Detroit Pistons made a major splash in NBA free agency by pulling off a sign-and-trade deal to bring in proven sharpshooter Duncan Robinson. In a move that signaled their intent to improve quickly, the Pistons sent Simone Fontecchio to the Miami Heat and acquired Miami’s 3-point franchise leader in return.
Robinson has worn No. 55 throughout his entire NBA career with the Heat. The question now becomes whether he’ll keep that familiar number in his new home.

According to NBA Numerologist Etienne Catalan, Robinson will continue to wear No. 55 with the Pistons. Catalan made the revelation on Monday after the Pistons confirmed his acquisition from the Heat, and the announcement graphic also featured the 31-year-old wearing the Pistons No. 55.

The number was last worn by Luka Garza in 2022, who spent just one season with the franchise. Garza was with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the last three seasons and signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract with the Boston Celtics at the start of free agency,
Meanwhile, Robinson signed a three-year, $48 million contract with the Pistons. He reportedly explored several options before Detroit became his preferred destination, especially after declining his $20 million early termination option to test free agency.
What Does Robinson Bring to Detroit?
The Pistons initially planned to sign Malik Beasley to a similar contract, but negotiations stalled after Beasley became involved in a federal gambling investigation.
Detroit quickly pivoted to target Robinson, who, at 31, remains one of the NBA’s most consistent 3-point shooters, with a career average of 39.7% from beyond the arc. Since the 2019-20 season, Robinson has made 1,192 three-pointers, ranking eighth in the league during that span.

Robinson’s arrival is expected to help Detroit compensate for the anticipated loss of Beasley’s production and further strengthen the team’s perimeter offense. He joins Caris LeVert among the Pistons’ offseason acquisitions.
Looking ahead, Robinson’s experience and shooting ability should boost the Pistons’ offense. He began his professional career with the Miami Heat in 2018 after going undrafted and quickly established himself as one of the league’s top shooters.
Robinson set multiple franchise and league records for 3-pointers, including making 270 threes in the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season. He also became the fastest player in NBA history to reach milestones such as 300, 500, and 800 career 3-pointers.
Although he lost his starting role late in his tenure with Miami, Robinson continued to contribute in the playoffs, setting a franchise postseason record with eight 3-pointers in a single game. His consistent shooting and ability to stretch defenses make him a valuable piece for the Pistons, and he should benefit from playing alongside Pistons star guard Cade Cunningham’s playmaking.
Over 74 outings during the 2024-25 season, Robinson averaged 11.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.5 steals, and 2.6 3-pointers per game, shooting 43.7%, including 39.3% from deep. As Robinson transitions to Detroit, the Pistons hope his experience and shooting ability will help drive sustained success in the coming seasons.
