Rockets GM Rafael Stone Reveals Real Reason for the Cam Whitmore Trade With Wizards in Brutally Honest Rant

After trading Cam Whitmore, Rockets GM Rafael Stone explained why he felt it was necessary to send the young player to the Wizards.

The Houston Rockets have been busy this offseason. They’ve perhaps made the biggest offseason move by acquiring Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns. They also surprised a few people when they traded Cam Whitmore to the Washington Wizards for pretty much nothing.

Since the Rockets made their moves, general manager Rafael Stone commented on why the team traded Whimore away.

Rafael Stone Believes Cam Whitmore Did Not Fit With Rockets’ Current Infrastructure

After trading Whitmore, Stone explained that because the Rockets are not focused on adding young talent, Whitmore didn’t fit with their timeline.

“I just think we’re not a developmental team right now,” Stone told reporters, per Sports Illustrated’s Lachard Binkley. “It’s really like you want to provide Cam with the opportunity to do in his career what we still believe he very much can do.”

Stone then added that Whitmore deserves opportunities where he can grow as a player.

“I think Cam is insanely talented, really nice young man and wanted to provide him an opportunity to go home and be in a situation where he can play through mistakes in the way we never could afford him just in the iteration of the Rockets that he joined.”

Whitmore flashed his talent with the Rockets, but it was clear that by trading for Durant, developing their young talent was no longer their biggest priority. Houston is coming off a season where the Rockets made a surprise run not only to make the playoffs, but also to become the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.

Even by doing that, they surprised everyone by pushing the Golden State Warriors to the brink. Acquiring Durant shows that they are not taking any chances. Even though their window is pretty long, adding him to the equation signals that they believe that they can win the title.

Whitmore simply did not fit with the team anymore because of their current plans. It doesn’t necessarily mean that he is a bust. It just means that the Rockets wanted to give him a fresh start by having him play for the Wizards.

For all Houston knows, the team will regret dumping him in the coming years. He should get the opportunities he deserves in Washington, where he could turn into something special. However, if the Rockets win the title, it will essentially be a moot point.
