While this offseason was expected to be relatively slow, major injuries to stars in the East and a heavily talented West have seen a different story unfold. The Miami Heat added to the blockbuster moves this summer, acquiring Norman Powell from the Los Angeles Clippers as part of a three-team deal.
The trade, which also involved the Utah Jazz, saw John Collins shipped to LA while Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson joined the Jazz along with a 2027 2nd-round pick from the Clippers. Miami not only got their wish of a volume-scoring guard as part of the deal but also offloaded Love and Anderson’s expiring contracts while freeing up a roster spot.
For Love, however, the travel might go on longer as reports of a buyout discussion with Utah emerge merely hours after the trade.
New York Knicks Emerge As Frontrunners for Kevin Love
After the deal went through, Jake Fischer reported Love is “certainly a buyout candidate in Utah.”
The Jazz, currently focused on building a team for the future, do not align with Love’s timeline as the forward heads towards the dusk of his career. The move would be mutually beneficial as Utah frees up a roster spot as they look to shake things up while Love gets a final shot at his second championship.
With the buyout looking obvious, NBA analyst Tim Reynolds decided to take a guess on the veteran’s landing spot. He named the New York Knicks as frontrunners. With Love expected to sign a veteran minimum deal, the move could be a no-brainer for New York.

Love would bring championship experience to a Knicks’ side who are coming off of their first Eastern Conference Finals in 25 years and looking to run it back next season. Firing coach Tom Thibodeau after the historic Playoff run, the Knicks will be under pressure to compete. The pressure will grow, considering an East that is weak and riddled by injuries.
While Love is certainly on a decline physically, his locker-room presence will be valuable for any contender. And although the Knicks present a good fit for the 36-year-old forward, there are plenty of other options that could suit the five-time All-Star.
The Minnesota Timberwolves could be among those options. Not only is Minnesota a solid contender led by Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels, but they were also Love’s first team.
Before he moved to Cleveland, where he won his first NBA title, Love lit up the Timberwolves crowd with his scintillating performances. So, not only does Minnesota gain a veteran presence in the locker room, but they also bring back a fan favorite.
The market for Love appears to be a vast one, with several teams boldly opening their championship windows this offseason. But whether or not Love sees a rise from the 10.9 minutes he averaged last season with Miami remains to be seen.
