As the San Francisco 49ers continue to recover from their disappointing loss in Super Bowl 58, they have several important decisions to make. Starting with a potential trade involving rising star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
San Francisco 49ers News Roundup Feb. 29
As the 49ers weigh the potential idea of trading Aiyuk, they also must decide what they are going to do in free agency. After swinging a big deal for pass rusher Chase Young at last season’s trade deadline, San Francisco must decide if it’s worth re-signing the young edge player. All of that and more is discussed in today’s 49ers news roundup!
NFL Trade Rumors: 49ers Have No Plans To Trade Brandon Aiyuk
Despite a report from Dan Graziano of ESPN suggesting that San Francisco will trade Brandon Aiyuk, 49ers general manager John Lynch seemed to dismiss that idea during his press conference at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.
“I think we’ve got a nice track record of extending the players that are important to us, and Brandon’s a guy we want to keep around for a long time,” Lynch said. Considering that Aiyuk took a massive step forward last season, it makes plenty of sense for the 49ers to extend one of the most promising young wide receivers in the NFL.
A report from NFL Analyst Chase Senior on Tuesday also mentioned that the 49ers have no plans to trade Aiyuk.
DeMeco Ryans Says 49ers Would Have Won Super Bowl 58 If They Had Dre Greenlaw
Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans offered a strong endorsement of his former player, 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Ryans stated that if Greenlaw hadn’t suffered an injury in Super Bowl 58, the game would have likely been different.
Ryans coached in San Francisco for six years before being hired by the Texans to be their head coach. He clearly understands how talented San Francisco’s defense is and believes that Greenlaw is a game-changing talent at linebacker. We’ll never know what would have happened if Greenlaw were able to stay on the field, but Ryans believes it had a huge impact on the outcome of Super Bowl 58.
NFL Report Card: 49ers Grade as League’s Sixth-Best Franchise by NFLPA
The results of the NFLPA’s annual player survey were revealed on Wednesday, which exposed several organizations across the league due to troubling reviews. Yet, the 49ers stood out as one of the NFL’s best, ranking sixth overall among the 32 teams.
San Francisco was praised for its treatment of players’ families and their food program. One criticism of the 49ers was the team’s training room, which was reported as being small and having a limited number of treatment tables.
Lorenzo Reyna’s 2024 NFL Mock Draft: Broncos Trade Up for J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix To Replace Daniel Jones in New York
Despite its Super Bowl loss, San Francisco is in relatively good shape heading into the offseason. They don’t have many holes on their roster, but Pro Football Network’s Lorenzo Reyna has the 49ers pulling off a blockbuster trade in his latest mock draft.
Reyna has San Francisco trading a package that includes Aiyuk for multiple players and draft picks. While 49ers’ general manager Lynch has stated the team intends to keep Aiyuk around, the possibilities are endless in the NFL.
49ers 2024 Free Agents: What Will Chase Young’s Market Look Like? Will Sam Darnold Re-Sign
Although the 49ers possess one of the most loaded rosters in the NFL, they’ll still have to make a few important decisions in free agency, starting with the 23-year-old pass rusher Young, who they traded for at last season’s deadline.
In 12 games with the 49ers, Young totaled just 3.5 sacks. Although his presence was felt more than the numbers indicate, San Francisco will have a difficult decision to make with its free agent pass rusher. As Pro Football Network’s Dallas Robinson mentioned, all it takes is one team willing to bet on Young’s potential to land him a huge deal.
