Going from Mr. Irrelevant to one of the NFL’s highest-paid players doesn’t happen often — but San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is getting close.
Picked 262nd overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy has become a key player for the 49ers. And now, with his rookie contract almost up, his next deal could be a huge one.

Brock Purdy’s New Deal Nowhere Near Done?
As the 2025 offseason rolls on, a new contract between Purdy and the 49ers still seems far off. When asked if there’s a chance Purdy could hold out, head coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear he doesn’t want it to get that far.
Shanahan said that holding out is something neither Purdy nor the team wants.
Kyle Shanahan was asked if he's prepared for Brock Purdy potentiality holding out:
"I hope not and I know Brock doesn't want to do that. We don't want to do that. I mean, no one wants to do that. But these are negotiations that go on between agents and our organization, and it's… pic.twitter.com/tKZy3G9iwi

“I hope not and I know Brock doesn’t want to do that,” Shanahan said. “We don’t want to do that. I mean, no one wants to do that. But these are negotiations that go on between agents and our organization, and it’s over a lot of money and stuff. Those aren’t just things that you just knock out right away. But I believe that we will. I hope that we do, and hopefully it won’t come in any football stuff.”
While the deal isn’t done yet, Shanahan sounds confident it’ll get worked out in time. He pointed to the logistics and money involved as the main reason for the delay.
Purdy’s Play in Disappointing 2024 for 49ers
Even though the 49ers missed the playoffs for the first time with Purdy as the starter, his 2024 season still stood out. Injuries across the roster made things tough from the start, and the team was fighting uphill all year.
Purdy threw for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns in 15 games—solid numbers, all things considered. According to PFSN’s QB+ metric, he ranked seventh among all quarterbacks, staying in the top 10 despite San Francisco’s 6-11 finish. Ben Rolfe of PFSN explained why Purdy earned an 87.6 (B+) grade.
“For the 2024 season, Purdy finished fifth in the league in overall EPA/DB (0.17) and fourth when playing under pressure (-0.08 EPA/DB) while sitting sixth when playing from a clean pocket (0.33 EPA/DB). Despite all the injuries around him, Purdy still averaged 8.1 nYPA (third) and a 44.3% conversion rate on third downs (eighth).
“His touchdown-to-interception rate of 1.7 was a disappointment, thanks largely to his TD rate falling through the floor from 7.6 as a rookie and 7.0 in 2023 to 4.4 this season. That is not entirely on Purdy, given all the 49ers’ injuries this season, but it does paint the picture that he’s a product of the players surrounding him more so than a truly elite QB.”
With the former Iowa State QB holding the offense together, keeping him around is a top priority for Shanahan and the front office. But with the size of the next contract still being debated, these talks may stretch on a while longer.
