The San Francisco 49ers have consistently made it clear that they intend to lock in quarterback Brock Purdy for the foreseeable future. Contract extension talks have only reinforced this commitment, and after nearly a month of back-and-forth, fresh reports suggest that both sides are on the verge of finalizing a deal.
General Manager John Lynch recently shared a potential timeline for the extension. While there are speculations that Purdy’s reported demand of $60 million annually might be too much for the 49ers, Lynch seems determined to get the deal done.

49ers GM Determined To Extend Brock Purdy, Shares Potential Timeline
The 49ers have a history of waiting until the very last moment to secure contract extensions for their players. For example, Nick Bosa’s extension was finalized just a day before the start of the 2023 season. Similarly, negotiations with Brandon Aiyuk stretched all the way until a week before the 2024 season.
San Francisco seemingly wants to break the narrative this offseason. Lynch hopes they would be able to lock him down “real soon this offseason.”
“Brock wants to be with us,” Lynch told local reporters at the annual league meeting. “We want Brock to be with us. When that’s the case, these things typically get done. And does it happen this offseason? I don’t know. Hopefully it happens real soon this offseason, but I think that’s the extent of getting into those things. … There’s motivation on both sides, and that’s always a good thing.”
When asked if a deal could be done by mid-April, Lynch replied: “I don’t think it’s too optimistic [to get it done by then],” Lynch said. “I think I understand why Brock wants that. We’d like that very much, so we’ve just got to find that right place for both sides, and I would love nothing more than for that to be the case.”
Contract-wise, there were rumors of Purdy’s contract potentially crossing Dak Prescott’s $60 million annual clip with the Cowboys had he been consistent. The QB’s biggest flaw in 2024 was his production completely breaking down in the second half of the game, raising questions around his ability to perform in tight games.
But nevertheless, Lynch appears determined to extend the Pro Bowler sooner or later.
“I think we’re going to get the deal done,” Lynch added. “That’s what I believe. We’ll just leave it at that.”
John Lynch says "he'd love nothing more" than for Brock Purdy contract to be done ahead of offseason program:
"Brock wants to be with us. We want Brock to be with us. When that's the case, these things get done… Hopefully, it happens really soon this offseason."

Purdy shocked the league when he took over as the 49ers’ starter in 2022. As the final pick in the draft, he proved that Kyle Shanahan’s system could elevate plug-and-play quarterbacks. Purdy led the team to the NFC title game as a rookie, then took them to a Super Bowl appearance in year two.
However, Purdy’s 2024 didn’t produce results for the 49ers, and they slipped to last place in the NFC West. Purdy threw for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, finishing seventh in the league in PFSN’s QB+ metric and recording a grade of 87.6 (B+).
Purdy’s down season is one of the reasons many believe he isn’t worth $60 million annually, and it could also be a factor in why the extension talks are taking longer than expected. However, as Lynch mentioned, sooner or later, Purdy will receive an extension—whether it’s for $60 million or less remains to be seen.
