The 2023 NFL free agency period had several big names coming off the board in the opening days and other impact players following in the ensuing weeks. And yet, a sizable number of talented guys remain unsigned. Who is the best of the 2023 NFL free agents at each position?
If you’re looking to see how the different free agents rank relative to each other, regardless of position, check out PFN’s Top 100 Free Agents for 2023.
2023 NFL Free Agents by Position | Offense
The talent available on offense is intriguing. There were a number of quarterbacks and running backs available in March, but when various players re-signed with their respective teams, and as teams used the franchise tag on key players, the landscape altered.
Quarterbacks
A couple months ago, it appeared the two biggest QB movers of free agency would be disgruntled franchise quarterbacks seeking a new home — one more for financial reasons, and the other more for . . . well, to win another Super Bowl before retiring.
Now, both are signed and the remaining QB free agents are less than inspiring.

1) Carson Wentz
2) Matt Ryan
3) Teddy Bridgewater
4) Trevor Siemian
Wide Receiver
The WR class for 2023 has been somewhat underwhelming compared to previous years. In March, there were a host of moderately talented players available, including several reclamation projects looking to recapture past glory. While a few of those guys remain on this list, none are surefire bets to start on any team this season.
1) Demarcus Robinson
2) Kenny Golladay
3) Julio Jones
4) Jarvis Landry
5) Equanimeous St. Brown
Running Backs
For now, we’re not including Saquon Barkley on this list. Like Lamar Jackson, he netted a franchise tag but is not expected to sign it — at least not yet. Barkley wants a long-term deal, and for good reasons, given his position, usage, and mileage.
If this standoff continues, we might qualify Barkley as a player potentially on the move. For now, the following list is comprised of former starters, all approaching (or deeply in) the latter stages of their careers.
1) Kareem Hunt
2) Ezekiel Elliott
3) Leonard Fournette
4) Kenyan Drake
Tight Ends
Some of the big TE names in March included Dalton Schultz and Mike Gesicki. Both are now on new teams, as are other notable tight ends seeking 50+ receptions as consistent or even semi-consistent offensive contributors.

The remaining players are either primarily blocking tight ends or else pass catchers seeking a backup role — or perhaps an emergency starter role if a No. 1 goes down this summer or early this season. Keep an eye on Sal Cannella, who’s played well these past 12 months in the XFL and USFL. He might get a shot as a No. 2 somewhere.
1) Maxx Williams
2) Sal Cannella
3) Parker Hesse
4) MyCole Pruitt
Offensive Line
Most of the top o-linemen came off the board pretty quickly this offseason. The remaining guys might serve as depth pieces or short-term starters.
1) Ben Jones
2) Donovan Smith
3) Taylor Lewan
4) Austin Blythe
5) A.J. Cann
2023 NFL Free Agents by Position | Defense
Outside of some uncertainty in terms of pass rushers, there was some real game-wrecking talent available at all three defensive levels at the start of free agency. But like locusts in a cornfield, the top stalks have been picked. Nevertheless, several of these players can make immediate contributions in the right situation.
Defensive Line
Much like the offensive line, the defensive line enjoyed star power at the beginning of free agency, headlined by Javon Hargrave. These days, we’re looking at rotational pieces and other assets to help round out a roster.
1) Shelby Harris
2) Akiem Hicks
3) Al Woods
4) A’Shawn Robinson
5) Michael Brockers
EDGE
After the 2022 season, the EDGE position looked like the weakest free agent class on defense. Now that a host of big contracts have been signed, the league is left with a collection of “can they still produce?” players with solid track records but question marks surrounding their ability to thrive.
1) Jadeveon Clowney
2) Yannick Ngakoue
3) Markus Golden
4) Al-Quadin Muhammad
5) Leonard Floyd
Linebackers
Another position that was rich with talent at the start of free agency. There could be some wait-and-see with many of the remaining players as teams size up their draft assets and short-term signees to gauge which gaps remain.
1) Zach Cunningham
2) Damien Wilson
3) Myles Jack
4) Deion Jones
5) Kwon Alexander
Defensive Backs
Of all the positions when it comes to the 2023 NFL free agents, defensive back appeared to be the deepest after the 2022 season. Headlining this group is Rock Ya-Sin, a 26-year-old former second-round pick — further evidence that the talent at this position might exceed teams’ needs and/or financial appetites.
1) Ronald Darby
2) William Jackson III
3) Greg Mabin
4) Davontae Harris
