We’re just days away from finding out the candidates to be immortalized in the College Football Hall of Fame. According to an announcement by the National Football Foundation on June 1, the names on the 2023 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame class will be announced on Monday, June 6, 2022.

2023 College Football Hall of Fame ballot announcement

Since its inception in 1951, over 1,300 players and coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. On Monday, June 6, we’ll find out the names of the candidates to join this select group in the 2023 class. The National Football Foundation (NFF) will announce the ballot at 11 a.m. ET. The announcement will be via a national press release and social media channels.

While we won’t know the names on the ballot until June 6, the NFF also announced on June 1 how many players and coaches have already been shortlisted. As per their press release, there will be 80 players and nine coaches from the FBS level of college football on the 2023 ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame. Additionally, there will be 96 players and 33 coaches from the NCAA divisional and NAIA ranks of college football on the ballot.

Eligibility requirements for the College Football Hall of Fame

Last year, 11 players and two coaches were inducted. Those included USC quarterback Carson Palmer, Clemson running back C.J. Spiller, and former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops. However, tight eligibility requirements mean that a mere 0.02% of all college football players and coaches will be immortalized in the Hall of Fame. But what are those requirements?

There is a very specific list of requirements for induction. The most important of those is that a player must have earned first-team All-American adoration from at least one of the outlets that comprises “consensus” in the eyes of the NCAA. These include the Associated Press and Football Writers Association of America.

A player becomes eligible 10 years after the end of their college career. Conversely, they have to have played college football within the last 50 years at the time of the ballot to be eligible. For example, eligible players in the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame class must have played their last year during the 1973 season or later.

For coaches, there are obviously different sets of requirements for inclusion. Coaches become eligible three years after retirement. However, if they are aged over 70 at the time of retirement, they are immediately eligible. Furthermore, active coaches aged 75 or over are also eligible. For consideration, coaches have to have coached for over 10 years and have a record of over .600 during their career.
