Week 8 featured blinded game-winning touchdowns, missed field goals late and a presumed tanking team dominating on Monday night – for a quarter, at least. As we reach the halfway point of the NFL season, here’s how the 32 teams stack up in our 2019 NFL Power Rankings Week 8.
1. New England Patriots (8-0)
Week 8 Result: Defeated Cleveland, 27-13
New England is rolling and showing no signs of slowing down. Another convincing win over the Browns (number 300 for Bill Belichick) has the Patriots halfway to another undefeated regular season and in total control for the AFC’s No. 1 seed in the playoffs. While the argument continues to be “they haven’t played anyone”, the fact is the defense is legitimate and Tom Brady is playing as good as he’s ever played. Their first true test, arguably, comes next Sunday night against the Ravens.
2. San Francisco 49ers (7-0)
Week 8 Result: Defeated Carolina, 51-13
If the 49ers didn’t open any eyes before Week 8, they absolutely did so in their 51-13 thrashing of the Panthers, in which they picked off three Kyle Allen passes and Tevin Coleman went off for four touchdowns. The 49ers are the real deal, currently the class of the NFC and perhaps the current favorites to represent the conference in Miami at Super Bowl LIV.
3. New Orleans Saints (7-1)
Week 8 Result: Defeated Arizona, 31-9
Drew Brees is back and the Saints are even more dangerous than they were with Teddy Bridgewater under center – in fairness, they were pretty dangerous then as well. New Orleans dominated the Cardinals Sunday for their sixth consecutive win and are rolling heading into their bye week, as they sit two games ahead in the loss column in the NFC South.
4. Green Bay Packers (7-1)
Week 8 Result: Defeated Kansas City, 31-24
Aaron Rodgers is laughing at everyone claiming he was declining. Another 300-yard game and three touchdowns on Sunday at Arrowhead, plus another strong showing from one of the best defenses in the league, has the Packers sitting at 7-1. A west coast trip awaits the team next week when Rodgers meets Philip Rivers and the Chargers.
5. Minnesota Vikings (6-2)
Week 8 Result: Defeated Washington, 19-9
What has gotten into Kirk Cousins? He’s actually playing…really well. The Vikings are dominating in all aspects of the field, but that defense could be really tested next week with the potential return of Patrick Mahomes when the Vikings travel to Kansas City.
6. Baltimore Ravens (5-2)
Week 8 Result: Bye
We’ve been watching history unfold before our eyes with Lamar Jackson. Additionally, the defense just keeps on ticking despite the thought it would drop off after losing Za’Darius Smith. Next week is huge for the Ravens, as they have a primetime showdown with the reigning champs. They’ll have had two weeks to prepare, so let’s see what they can come up with.
7. Seattle Seahawks (6-2)
Week 8 Result: Defeated Atlanta, 27-20.
Another week, another MVP-caliber performance from Russell Wilson as Seattle moved to 6-2. Every time this team seems to be left for dead, Wilson does Wilson things year-in and year-out. A home game against the Buccaneers next week awaits before a huge Monday night showdown with the undefeated 49ers.
8. Indianapolis Colts (5-2)
Week 8 Result: Defeated Denver, 15-13
Frank Reich is yet again showing off his fantastic coaching skills as the Colts refuse to go away, despite not having Andrew Luck. Jacoby Brissett’s solid play continues to help keep the ship afloat for the AFC South-leading Colts.
