With the 77th pick in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots select defensive end Chase Winovich from Michigan.

Chase Winovich is a player whose stock had been soaring leading up to the 2019 NFL Draft. He is the ultimate “Charlie Hustle”, as he plays like his hair is on fire. Given he has marketable hair and relentless motor it won’t take much time for Winovich to become a fan favorite.

Despite the fact that Winovich isn’t the biggest dog in the fight, he brings acute toughness and competitiveness to the table. He is absolutely relentless at all aspects of the game. Whether it be playing the run, blitzing the quarterback or covering a tight end, you will get a maximum effort from Winovich on every play.

Injuries are a concern when it comes to Winovich. He battled injury throughout his college career at Michigan and similarly suffered a foot injury that required surgery during the draft process. He doesn’t exemplify elite athleticism as demonstrated by his lack of burst. At times Winovich can be too aggressive and tends to over-pursue the football.

How will Winovich help the Patriots?

Winovich can change the culture of a football team through his work ethic, relentless effort, and intangibles. If put in a position to succeed, Winovich can thrive in the mold of Clay Matthews Jr. during his time in Green Bay.

The New England Patriots needed a high-quality edge rusher with the departure of Trey Flowers in free agency. Winovich should come in and immediately take up that mantle. How productive he can be remains to be seen. However, this pick is a good value for the Patriots, a team who has a tendency to make great picks in the lower rounds.
